Philodendron billietiae × Philodendron rubrijuvenile
Tropical Americas and Caribbean; exact range depends on species.
Hybrid foliage expected to combine red-backed El Choco influence with billietiae's elongated leaves/orange petiole traits.
May climb or crawl depending on parentage; support and humidity strongly influence mature leaf size.
This is a cultivated hybrid cross between Philodendron billietiae (native to the Guianas and Brazil) and a Philodendron rubrijuvenile, commonly known as 'El Choco Red' (native to the Chocó region of Colombia)
Hybrid cross: Philodendron billietiae ×Philodendron rubrijuvenile
Prefers bright indirect light and warm, humid conditions with well-draining aroid mix. Water when top inch of soil is dry; avoid waterlogging. Provide a moss pole or sturdy support as this cross tends to be a vigorous climber with larger leaves.
Aroid mix: 40% orchid bark, 40% coco coir, 20% perlite. Repot annually or every 18 months in spring when roots circle the pot. This hybrid appreciates space but not heavy root-binding; ensure pot has drainage holes.
Monthly during growing season (spring–summer)
- Root rot from overwatering; spider mites and mealybugs in low humidity; slow growth in insufficient light; leaf yellowing from cold exposure or poor drainage
- P"Philodendron billietiae is native to the Guiana Shield and Brazil, known for its exceptionally long, narrow juvenile leaves that mature into deeply lobed forms.
- 'El Choco Red' is a red-leaved cultivar from the Colombian Chocó region, prized for its striking foliage coloration.
- This cross combines billietiae's vining vigor with potential red pigmentation, creating a hybrid with both ornamental and growth-habit appeal."
