Origin & Habitat

Cultivar of nursery origin; self-heading hybrid Philodendron

Description

Lance- to heart-shaped leaves emerging bright chartreuse/neon-lime, maturing to mid-green; glossy texture.

Compact, self-heading rosette; does not climb.

Botanical Notes

Genus from Greek 'philo' (love) + 'dendron' (tree), referring to many species' habit of climbing trees. 'Moonlight' is a horticultural cultivar name, for its glowing lime-green new growth.

Philodendron 'Moonlight' is a popular self-heading hybrid grown for its luminous chartreuse to neon-lime new leaves, which emerge almost yellow and gradually deepen to mid-green. It forms a compact clump and is one of the easier, brightest philodendron cultivars for indoor growing.

Care Guide

Bright indirect light keeps the new growth glowing lime (lower light dulls it). Water when the top 2–3 cm dries; no support needed. An easy, cheerful self-header.

Repotting

Aroid mix (40% orchid bark, 40% coco coir, 20% perlite). Repot every 1–2 years in spring; keep as a self-heading clump.

Feeding

Monthly during growing season (spring–summer)

Common Problems
  • Root rot from overwatering; duller, greener new growth in low light; spider mites in dry air; brown tips from low humidity.
Notes & Curiosities
  • Its new leaves glow an almost neon chartreuse, brightening any spot — hence 'Moonlight'.
  • It's a compact self-header, so it stays shelf-friendly and doesn't need a pole.
  • The lime new growth contrasts beautifully with the older mid-green leaves.
Toxicity: toxic to pets, toxic to humans. All parts contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals; chewing or ingestion causes oral irritation, a burning sensation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing in pets and humans.
