Genus from Greek 'philo' (love) + 'dendron' (tree), referring to many species' habit of climbing trees. Epithet 'erubescens' means 'blushing'. 'White Knight' is a horticultural cultivar name.
White Knight' is a striking variegated cultivar associated with Philodendron erubescens (parent species native to Colombia), distinguished from 'White Princess' by its climbing habit and dark maroon stems streaked with cream. Leaves are dark green to near-black with bold white sectors. The variegation is chimeric and unstable, so consistent bright indirect light is important to prevent reversion.
Aroid mix (40% orchid bark, 40% coco coir, 20% perlite). Repot every 12–18 months in spring; provide a moss pole. Variegated forms prefer well-draining substrate.
Monthly during growing season (spring–summer)
- Root rot from overwatering; loss of variegation/colour and leggy growth in low light; spider mites and mealybugs in dry air; brown leaf tips from low humidity or tap-water minerals.
- White Knight' is a climber with dramatic dark maroon-and-cream striped stems, unlike the self-heading White Princess.
- Its near-black leaves make the white variegation especially high-contrast.
- As a chimeric variegate, it can revert to all-green or throw all-white (unsustainable) leaves if light is wrong.
