Treat as a trade name rather than a settled species record. Kew POWO lists Monstera karstenianum as a synonym of Philodendron opacum, while the houseplant sold as Monstera Peru is usually handled in cultivation as Monstera sp. 'Peru' or Monstera sp. Peru 'Karstenianum'. Do not confuse it with Rhaphidophora tetrasperma ('Mini Monstera').
Give bright, indirect light to maintain variegation, but avoid harsh direct sun on pale sectors. Use a chunky, airy aroid mix and water when the upper mix has partly dried. Provide a pole or plank for climbing; mature trade plants usually keep textured leaves rather than producing true Monstera deliciosa-style fenestrations.
Aroid mix: 50% orchid bark or chunky coco coir, 30% regular potting soil, 20% perlite. Variegated forms benefit from extra aeration. Repot every 12–18 months in spring when roots emerge from drainage holes. Keep slightly snug around the moss pole to encourage climbing.
