Ficus elastica 'Ruby'

Ruby' is a named cultivar of Ficus elastica, selected for its deep burgundy-red juvenile foliage and contrasting red-tinged undersides. The species is native to India, Indonesia, and Malaysia; the cultivar was developed in ornamental horticulture to enhance the ornamental appeal of this popular houseplant.
Ruby' features deep burgundy-red new growth that matures to dark green with prominent red veining and burgundy undersides—a stunning cultivar of the classic rubber plant. Provide bright indirect light and allow soil to dry between waterings; overwatering is the most common killer. Wipe leaves monthly with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and maximize photosynthesis.
Well-draining potting mix: 50% high-quality potting soil, 30% perlite or pumice, 20% orchid bark. Repot every 18–24 months in spring when roots circle the pot. Ficus elastica prefers being slightly root-bound and resents frequent disturbance—only repot when necessary. Ensure pot has drainage holes.
Monthly during growing season (spring–summer)
- Leaf drop if moved frequently or exposed to cold drafts; brown leaf edges from low humidity or hard tap water; spider mites and scale in dry conditions; root rot if soil stays waterlogged.
- The 'Ruby' cultivar's striking red new growth gradually darkens as it matures, creating a natural color progression on the same plant.
