Description

Large thick glossy oval leaves, green to burgundy or variegated depending on cultivar; new leaves emerge from red sheaths.

Upright woody indoor tree with strong stems, aerial roots in humid conditions and milky latex sap.

Botanical Notes

Species epithet elastica refers to the elastic rubbery latex once used for rubber.

Accepted Ficus species. Many houseplant forms are cultivars selected for leaf colour and variegation.

Care Guide

Give bright indirect light and let the upper mix dry before watering. Rotate for even growth.

Repot when rootbound or top-heavy. Use a chunky, well-draining mix and stake if needed.

Notes & Curiosities
