Anthurium dolichostachyum
Southern Colombia to Ecuador.
First described by Luis Sodiro. (1901)
Large green heart-shaped to elongated leaves with prominent venation; foliage may look glossy and substantial in cultivation.
Upright epiphytic foliage Anthurium with leaves held from a central stem/crown.
dolicho- means long; stachyum refers to a spike, alluding to the long inflorescence/spadix.
Accepted Anthurium species. POWO lists it as an epiphyte from the wet tropical biome.
Provide bright filtered light, humidity, and a chunky mix that holds some moisture without becoming stagnant.
Repot only when needed into a chunky bark/perlite/coco or similar aroid mix. Keep the crown above the mix and avoid oversized pots.
Monthly at quarter to half strength during active growth. Flush occasionally if using mineral fertiliser.
- Root rot in old media; leaf edge browning from dry air or salts; confusion with other large green collector Anthuriums in trade.
- The name is satisfyingly literal: long spike.
