Anthurium balaoanum was formally described from material collected in the Balaos area of Esmeraldas Province in northwestern Ecuador, a region rich in tropical biodiversity. The species epithet 'balaoanum' directly references its type locality. It belongs to section Calomystrium, a clade of Central and South American anthuriums characterized by relatively large, deeply lobed or entire leaves and preference for humid lowland to premontane forests. The genus Anthurium comprises over 1,000 species, making it one of the largest Araceae genera; A. balaoanum remains uncommon in horticulture. It is a subshrub or epiphyte and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome.
Anthurium balaoanum thrives in bright, indirect light and consistent high humidity (70–85%); misting or a humidifier is essential. Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged; use an aroid mix with excellent drainage. Feed monthly during spring and summer, and provide warm, stable temperatures between 18–28°C.
Use a chunky aroid mix: 50% orchid bark, 30% coco coir, 20% perlite. Anthurium balaoanum prefers to be slightly pot-bound; repot every 18–24 months in spring when roots begin to circle the pot. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and is not oversized, as excess soil retains moisture and invites rot.

- Like all Anthurium species, the inflorescence (flower spike) is actually a spadix surrounded by a spathe (the colourful 'petal'), and the plant produces true berries containing seeds—a rarity in houseplant cultivation.
