Leaf Forms & Variegation
A quick reference to leaf shapes, fenestrations, variegation types, and surface textures in common houseplants.
Basic Leaf Shapes
- Cordate — Heart-shaped, with a notch at the base. Very common in Philodendron and Anthurium.
- Lanceolate — Long and narrow, tapering to a point. Typical of Sansevieria, Dracaena, many bromeliads.
- Ovate — Broadly oval, widest near the base. Seen in Ficus, Peperomia, Pilea.
- Palmate — Lobed like an outstretched hand. Classic in Fatsia, Schefflera, some Philodendron.
- Pinnatifid — Deeply lobed along a central midrib. The characteristic mature form of Monstera deliciosa.
- Linear — Grass-like, long and narrow. Typical of many grasses, sedges, and Chlorophytum.
Fenestrations
Fenestrations are the natural holes or splits in the leaves of certain species, most famously Monstera deliciosa and its relatives.
They are believed to help leaves withstand high winds in the canopy and may improve light penetration to lower growth. Juvenile plants generally lack fenestrations — they develop as the plant matures and produces larger leaves.
A plant that isn't fenestrating despite reasonable maturity usually needs more light.
Variegation
Variegation is the uneven distribution of chlorophyll (and sometimes other pigments) in leaves, producing patches, stripes, or sectors of white, cream, yellow, or pink.
Genetic (stable) variegation
Encoded in the plant's DNA — all new leaves will be variegated. Examples: Aglaonema cultivars, Maranta leuconeura, most Tradescantia cultivars.
Chimeric (sectoral) variegation
Caused by a mutation affecting some but not all cell lines. Two genetically distinct cell populations coexist in the plant. Variegation can be unstable — plants may revert to all-green. Examples: Monstera deliciosa 'Thai Constellation', Philodendron 'White Wizard'.
Viral variegation
Caused by a plant virus. The famous colour breaks on certain tulip cultivars are the best-known example. Uncommon in houseplants and best avoided, as the virus can spread to other plants.
Reflective variegation
Not a lack of chlorophyll, but air pockets between leaf cell layers that scatter light, creating a silvery sheen. Examples: Scindapsus pictus, Begonia pavonina.
Caring for variegated plants
White or cream sections contain little or no chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesise. Heavily variegated plants grow more slowly and require more light than their all-green counterparts.
If a chimeric plant begins producing entirely green leaves, prune back to where variegation was last present. Some light adjustment can help encourage it to return, but it is never guaranteed.
Surface Textures
- Bullate — Puckered or quilted, with raised texture between the veins. Hoya kerrii, some Peperomia.
- Velutinous — Velvety surface due to fine, dense hairs. Philodendron gloriosum, Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet'.
- Glabrous — Smooth and hairless. Most Monstera, Ficus.
- Hirsute — Covered in coarser, longer hairs. Some Begonia, Gynura aurantiaca.
- Waxy — A pronounced cuticle that reduces water loss. Most Hoya, Sedum, Echeveria.
